Onion is a cool season crop grown under wide range of climatic conditions through out India. March – April in south India. August – September for kharif crop, October – November for Rabi crop in plain. About 10-12 kg seeds in Rabi and 12-15 kg seed in kharif is required per hectare. Onion needs a heavy dose of fertilizers for goods yield, hence 20- 25 ton of farm yard manure, 80 to 150 kg N 00-80 P and 00-60 kg K/ha is recommended depending upon variety, season and soil. In kharif 10-12 irrigation and Rabi 15-20 irrigation is required depending upon climatic and soil state.
Onion is ready for harvesting in 3-5 month for bulb and 2-3 month for green Onion leaves. Common Onion variety yield up to 200-300 Qtl/ha. However adverse climatic condition, rainfall, temperature, PH soil, insect pest and virus attack may adversely affect the yield.
